These are the top ten most interesting facts about Uganda

Some of you may be quite knowledgeable about Uganda while others may not. I'm Emmanuel Katto, a journalist from Uganda also known as Emmanuel Katto Uganda or Emka Emmanuel Katto. I focus on covering and gathering the most recent African news with a focus on Uganda. I'll share with you the top ten fascinating facts about Uganda today that I learned from this article.


1- In order to communicate the beauty, variety, and natural wealth of the country, Winston Churchill, a British statesman, gave Uganda the moniker "Pearl of Africa" in 1908. Uganda is one of Africa's most sought-after tourism destinations.   

2- Uganda is one of the most densely populated countries in Africa with a population of 45 million (about twice the population of New York). It is also one of the fastest-growing countries in Africa.   

3- Uganda consists of the world’s youngest population. The median age in Uganda is just 15.7 years.  

4- The nickname of Kampala is 'City of Seven Hills'. The name Kampala originates from the local Bugandan name ‘K’empala’ which refers to the Hill of the Impala’, a name given to the colonial settlement by the British.  

5- Lake Victoria is the largest lake located in Uganda. It is the largest tropical lake in the world, and it is the second-largest freshwater lake in the world.   

6- Margherita Peak of Mount Stanley in the Ruwenzori Mountains with 5,109 m/ 16,762 ft is the highest peak in Uganda.   

7- English and Swahili are the official languages of Uganda, while Luganda, also referred to as Ganda, is spoken widely in Uganda. Until the year 2005, the official language of Uganda was English only.   

8- Above 80% population of Uganda are Christians, near about 45% are Protestants, and 39% the Catholics. Muslims also exist in about 14%.   

9- There are 10 national parks in Uganda known for their pristine forest landscape. The famous parks or attractions of Uganda include the Ruwenzori mountains and the Great Rift Valley. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is very popular for its Mountain Gorilla population, which also results in gorilla trekking.   

10- There are many different species of animals in Uganda, including giraffes, elephants, antelopes, buffalo, hippopotamuses, and crocodiles. Uganda is renowned as a destination for birdwatchers. In Uganda, there are thought to be a thousand different bird species. The most prevalent bird species in this area are the African jacana and orange weaver.    

These are just a few facts about Uganda; nonetheless, the nation is endowed with an array of natural riches, a sumptuous terrain, and a vast spectrum of biological diversity, which collectively define Uganda as the "Pearl of Africa."
